Why This Reference Exists
Older printed listings are only one part of Petersburg research. Current ownership information is maintained by the City Assessor and Petersburg Circuit Court Clerk, while historical directory volumes, maps, newspapers, and microfilm sit with the Petersburg Public Library and Library of Virginia. Virginia's voter rules and vital-record laws add separate access limits. The aim is to identify the right custodian, collection, and access route before a search begins.
What Is Included
- Pages by record angle: the street directory for address-keyed sources, the Directory Book for historical volumes, and the resident lookup for one-person verification
- Custodians and collections: the assessor, circuit clerk, registrar, courts, vital-records offices, and library local-history holdings
- Practical trails: ways to follow an address, interpret a directory entry, or compare household evidence across years
- Access boundaries: Virginia FOIA procedures, confidentiality rules, and the counter or archive fallback when a record is not online
Limits of This Service
This is a privately operated reference, not a Petersburg office, Independent City department, Virginia agency, court, or library. Its limits are straightforward:
- We cannot confirm whether a specific person currently lives in Petersburg
- We cannot pull, certify, or change any record on your behalf
- We cannot add anyone to, or remove anyone from, any roll or database
- We cannot give legal advice about a record or a dispute
- We cannot guarantee that every link, coverage period, fee, or office detail is current at a particular moment
Only the custodian office can confirm, certify, or correct a record. Nothing found through this site may be used for credit, employment, tenant, or insurance decisions.
